No Regrets

A tribute poem a friend wrote to Edgar Allan Poe

Let me whisper in your ears,
The telltale sounds, the heart beating.
As I sit here in the kingdom by the sea,
Among black birds ravens, quiet
As the bell resounds into the night.

No purer blue than the sky,
As it bleeds out into the sea.
No more does this heart beat out,
As it melds in with symphonies.
Can no other thing appease my soul?
I drop down into the searing fires,
And upon seraph wings, jealous no more,
Who saved me then drowned me more
In such unfathomable emotion.
In such pure essence,
In a sense no other can sense
Such ethereal beings estrange my soul,
Where fruits of abundance and fruits of temptations
Rot out the endings and condemn me to flames.

Let me whisper the truth in lies
Where the heart beats out its telltale song
As crows and blackbirds call out.
Crying out into the sea-sky blended:
Do you see what I see
And feel what can’t be felt?
Such walled in emotions this drunken fool holds
And I, trapped in raptures of pride and arrogance.

In these chambers of the kingdom,
Where the sea and sky meet,
Where blue turns to tempest black,
Where light fades into darkness,
Consciousness tainted by impulses,
Dreams, bittersweet nightmares,
My mind constantly pondering,
If my mind where my own or not,
A single bell tolls in the distance,
Memories, bitter sweet memories…
